Akwaaba e.V. on Radio Oeins

Our founder Jessica was a guest on Radio Oldenburg Eins on August 29, 2024, where she shared her experiences from her stay in Ghana. During a medical internship, she traveled to Accra to gain first-hand medical insights. In the broadcast, she discussed her experiences and the many aspects that shaped her time in Ghana.

The journey began with a smooth arrival in Accra, but the first impressions were particularly intense. In the radio segment, the linguistic challenge posed by the many dialects in Ghana was discussed, even though English is widely used as the main language of communication. What stood out most for Jessica was the warm hospitality she experienced right away, which she found to be very positive.

Another focus of the radio segment was on the culture in Ghana, particularly the club scene. Our association's founder shared enthusiastically about the local clubs, where it's less about partying in the conventional sense and more about dancing and singing. Dance battles are an integral part of the nightlife and created unforgettable moments.

The medical care in Ghana was also discussed in detail. Our association's founder shared her personal experience when she visited a clinic due to an infection. She provided a deep insight into the often very basic conditions on-site: water supply in some clinics was provided from buckets, patients were often treated on metal beds without mattresses, and medications had to be purchased privately from pharmacies and brought to the clinic with a prescription. The lack of a public insurance system presented a significant challenge.

Another important aspect of the contribution was the attitude of the religious population in Ghana towards conventional medicine. Many people trust traditional healing methods, which, in combination with modern medicine, presents unique challenges.

At the end of the segment, Jessica explained why she wants to return to Ghana to continue helping on-site. Akwaaba e.V. collects donations that go directly into supporting clinics and expanding medical care in Ghana.

A heartfelt thank you to Ulrich Bernstorf and the team at Radio Oeins.
