Eye Screening and Eye Health Education in Schools

As part of a multi-day health campaign, eye examinations were conducted at two schools in July 2025. The aim of the initiative was to detect vision problems in children at an early stage, provide education on eye health, and offer support according to individual needs.

The first examinations took place on July 10 at NW Covenant School, and the second event was held on July 11 at Mount Holly Academy.
After the official welcome by the respective school management, the events were opened with a short prayer and introductory remarks. Afterwards, partners from Akwaaba e.V. provided information about the association’s work and its commitment to healthcare, particularly with regard to disadvantaged population groups.

An ophthalmologist from the region gave an informative lecture on common eye diseases, particularly those frequently occurring among schoolchildren. Topics included visual impairments as well as allergy-related eye problems. In addition, basic measures for maintaining eye health were discussed, with the aim of strengthening the children’s awareness of how to take care of their eyesight.

Subsequently, comprehensive eye examinations were carried out. These included not only students from all grade levels but also interested parents, teachers, and non-teaching staff. In total, more than 300 people were reached.

For children who were found to be in need of medical treatment, we had arranged suitable medication in advance and distributed it on site.

For all children diagnosed with a vision impairment, the relevant information was documented—including a photo, vision diagnosis, and prescription details. This data will be used to specifically seek sponsors in Germany who can cover the costs of individually tailored glasses.

The events were successful and were received with great interest and gratitude by the school community. Media coverage on site highlights the importance of such initiatives for the region.

A big thank you goes to all participants, supporters, and helpers.
